History

First appeared in Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica with no categorisation between Bai zhu and Cang zhu.

Traditional Usage

Baizhu is a bitter tasting herb that is aromatic and warm in nature. It is associated with the spleen and stomach, making it a good choice for regulating the digestive system. It is able to tonify the chi, strengthen the spleen, dry dampness and eliminate water accumulation, prevent excessive sweating and stabilise pregnancy. Because it aids digestion and absorption, it can be used in multiherb remedies where the other ingredients may overburden the digestive system.

Modern Research

Baizhu has been used in clinical trials to treat constipation, diarrhea, liver disorders, dizziness and excessive salivation with good results.
