Traditional Usage

Turmeric has been used in Western herbal medicine since its introduction from India. Valued for its anti-inflammatory properties, particularly for joint conditions. Also used as a cholagogue, for digestive complaints, and as a general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Modern Research

One of the most extensively researched medicinal plants. Curcumin, the primary active compound, has demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory effects through COX-2, LOX, and NF-κB inhibition. Research supports benefits for osteoarthritis, depression, metabolic syndrome, and cognitive function. Poor bioavailability improved with piperine (black pepper) or lipid formulations.
